This document is the 8th rare birds report of the Extremaduran Rarities Committee (CREX), established in 2016 and currently comprised of five members. This report contains a total of 67
records of rare bird species) in the Extremadura region in southwest Spain. 98% of records are from 2024. 86.6% of records received were accepted by the committee. Highlights in 2024 included the first record of of Yellow-billed Egret Ardea brachyrhyncha for Spain, and only the fourth for the Western Palearctic, and Extremadura’s first Caspian Gull Larus cachinnans as well as the region’s second records of Blue-winged Teal Spatula discors, Whiterumped Sandpiper Calidris fuscicollis, White-backed Vulture Gyps africanus and Rough-legged Buzzard Buteo lagopus. Additionally, several species were recorded in the region for the first time in a number of years, for example Common Scoter Melanitta nigra (the first record since 2016), Rednecked Phalarope Phalaropus lobatus (ditto) and Ring-necked Duck Aythya collaris (the first record since 2019). 2024 was a noteworthy year for rare waterfowl: a group of six Brent Goose Branta bernicla, a Tundra Bean Goose Anser serrirostris, two American Green-winged Teal Anas crecca carolinensis and two new records of Marbled Duck Marmaronetta angustirostris, a species whose presence in the region probably involved individuals from the ongoing reintroduction programme in Andalusia.
